Accushape Die Cutting: Understanding Non-Metallic Gaskets

As discussed in Gallagher’s blog post on “Non-Metallic Gaskets,” gasket materials can be categorized into three main types: non-metallic, semi-metallic, and metallic. Non-metallic gaskets, also known as soft gaskets, are crafted from materials like rubber, fiber, PTFE, and graphite. These materials make them suitable for flat-faced applications with low pressures. In contrast, semi-metallic gaskets combine metal and non-metallic components, offering strength, resilience, conformability, and sealability. Such gaskets are commonly used in higher-pressure applications, and one of the popular types is spiral wound gaskets.

Shelf life plays a crucial role as it refers to the duration a material remains suitable for use during storage. Factors like oxygen, light, heat, humidity, and more can impact gasket degradation. Materials with elastomeric binders are widely used but susceptible to deterioration from higher temperatures and sunlight. Reinforcing fibers in elastomer-bonded fiber materials are relatively more stable, but gradual aging can occur over time.
